Things don't usually bother me .... but it was hard to get to sleep last night. I was with two friends on site. We had a long session in broken English with lots of dictionary consultations. Stories that were difficult to tell and almost as difficult to hear. The man painfully takes off his shirt and shows me his wounds. A bullet had entered his upper back and exited by his collar bone. The entry wound was bad but the exit wound was fifty times worse. Humans are tough creatures, how he survived I'll never know. 2003-05-28

Teamwork and how to harness it Cycling is usually a solitary occupation and I like it that way. It gives time to think on the flat, going downhill is exciting and going uphill teaches patience and perseverance! The snag is that once you have achieved a reasonable standard of proficiency non-cyclists can't keep up with you and the 'real' cyclists leave you in the dust! Sunday I was in a 85k charity spin and joined the lead group with the intention of staying with them until I was dropped. We got into the paceline routine and really tore up the road. I trimmed over an hour off my best time for the trip on my own. Mind you that was with the help of a lot of drafting and an occasional push in the last stages. Now how do I apply that lesson to the support group team? |
