17 arrested in crackdown on bogus asylum seekers
07:44 Monday July 21st 2003

Gardai in Dublin, Cork and Clare arrested 17 asylum seekers over the weekend as part of a crackdown on people suspected of abusing the asylum system.

The 17 detainees, who are from west Africa and eastern Europe, are suspected of applying for asylum under false names after their original applications were rejected. They are expected to face swift deportation.

Hmm... the timing of these things is usually not coincidental. If we take this along with the report earlier last week about 700 possible deportations, then this might mean that something is going on.

Has the Department of Justice finally come to a decision on how to handle the 10000 people caught by the L&O Supreme Court judgement in January?

Is it a good or a bad sign? Your guess is as good as mine!
